This signal tower was one of several towers designed for the original Boston Elevated Railway by Alexander Wadsworth Longfellow, Jr. It was built in 1901 along with their "Main Line" the Atlantic Avenue Loop and switched trains at this location until the Atlantic Avenue Loop was abandoned. It then remained in place until the orange line was moved several blocks west and underground.
When the Orange Line was moved a three way competition was held for the best museum to to be able to move and preserve the structure. Seashore Trolley won the competition and took approximately a year to complete the move.
